“.through careful allocation of the budget the firm has succeeded in dramatically improving the buildings’ internal organization, environmental performance, and external appearance. This is a project about strategy and according to the client the architect understood perfectly what was required. The building has an intuitive order and well-judged balance between privacy and a sense of belonging to the wider group”.

The refurbishment and remodeling of the Sculpture School in Battersea, was a response to the low thermal performance, inadequate ventilation and poor daylight of the existing warehouses. Circulation routes were unclear and orientation was difficult for both users and visitors.
The new plan sets studio spaces and workshops about a cruciform circulation pattern reminiscent of a Roman ‘Cardo’ and ‘Decumanus’, with the main stair located at the crossing.
New materials maintain the rugged simplicity of the existing building, befitting of its purpose: the most notable addition being a new aluminium roof, with large areas of glazing for natural light and purpose made ridge cowls that provide natural ventilation. Externally, grey masonry paint and metal screens have been used to bind a previously incongruous palette of materials.
