Lambeth Palace shortlisted for AJ Retrofit & Reuse Award
Recognition for decarbonising one of the UK's most significant historic estates
We are delighted that the Lambeth Palace Masterplan has been shortlisted for the AJ Retrofit & Reuse Awards in the Decarbonisation at Scale category.
The category celebrates ambitious projects delivering significant carbon savings across large or complex historic estates. Completed in 2025, the masterplan represents the most significant renewal of the Grade I listed estate in more than 70 years.
A fabric-first approach reduced energy demand at source before the introduction of renewable systems, including a new on-site Energy Centre powered by three air source heat pumps and photovoltaic panels. The careful upgrades to the historic fabric, including the replacement of 160 windows with historically accurate double-glazed units, reduced heating demand by 41%. Across the estate, the works achieved a 63% reduction in operational energy use.
Developed as a test bed for the Church of England’s commitment to net zero carbon by 2030, the project has helped establish a practical approach to cutting carbon across historic buildings and estates.
The winners will be announced in September 2026.
